On February 5, Davida attended a feeding clinic to have a occupational therapy feeding evaluation. Davida's occupational therapist, Molly, had suggested that we attend a feeding clinic since Davida has difficulty initiating oral motor control. Davida's jaw frequently gets "stuck" in extension causing poor closure and she also thrusts her tongue causing food to run out of her mouth. In January, Davida had a Modified Barium swallow study which showed delayed oral transit. It was suggested that we thicken all liquids.
Molly was really impressed with the progress Davida has made with eating. Davida has a great appetite and is showing improved head/neck control. Molly recommended that Davida work on drinking out of a cup and eating dissolvable solids. We will have a follow up feeding clinic in 4 to 6 months.
After the feeding clinic, we were able to meet with Dr. Peterson, the developmental pediatrician that had initially diagnosed Davida. He was able to discuss Davida's MRI in further detail. The finding was "Symmetric bilateral encephalomalacia identified in the posterior frontal and perietal lobes. Findings are most consistent with chronic infraction. No mass effect, midline shift, or evidence of hemorrage is seen." Dr. Peterson believes this was the result of a vascular event. He also suggested that we visit a neurologist because he was concerned that Davida may be having seizures. We also will be following up with Dr. Peterson in 4 months.
On a side note, Davida's height was 27.6 inches and weight was 18lbs,2.5oz. She had lost some weight from attending daycare part time for about a week and a half while I tried to do some contract work. She refused to eat or sleep at daycare...little stinker! Since returning home full-time, she is now weighing in at 19lbs, 5oz. Yay!!
